Consumer unit upgrades and fuse box replacement

The consumer unit controls and protects every circuit in a property. A replacement is planned around the existing wiring, earthing, circuit count and any additions you expect to make.
01When to enquire

Start with the property and the result you need.

  • An older fuse box uses rewireable fuses
  • An EICR recommends replacement or improved protection
  • The unit is damaged, crowded or has no room for planned circuits
  • You are preparing for an EV charger, extension or renovation

02What to expect

A methodical route from enquiry to completion.

01

Survey

The existing board, supply, earthing, bonding and circuits are assessed before the replacement is specified.

02

Plan

The new board and protective devices are matched to the installation and any agreed future circuits.

03

Replace

The old unit is removed, the new unit installed and each circuit clearly identified.

04

Test

Connected circuits are tested and the appropriate certification is provided for the completed work.

03An important distinction

A new board does not erase existing faults

Testing can expose problems that an older fuse box did not reveal. Any pre-existing fault or circuit repair is explained and agreed as a separate part of the scope.

04Service questions

Before you decide what happens next.

How long will the power be off?

The supply must be isolated for part of the work. The expected interruption is discussed once the circuit count and access are known.

Will every circuit be tested?

The circuits connected to the new consumer unit are tested. If a fault is found, the options are explained before additional work is carried out.
